What If the Other Side Is Even Better?
A Different Conversation About Menopause
When we talk about menopause, we spend an awful lot of time talking about what women are going to lose.
Their periods, their estrogen, their muscle, their bone density, their metabolism, their libido…
Their patience. 😂
And yes, some of those changes are real and deserve our attention.
But sometimes I wonder if we've spent so much time warning women about menopause that we've forgotten to tell them something else:
There is an entire life waiting on the other side.
For many women, menopause arrives somewhere around the early 50s. That could mean another 30, 40, even 50 years ahead. And I don't want those years to be framed as one long attempt to stop aging.
I want us asking a much better question:
What am I building for the woman I'm becoming?
Perimenopause Is the Transition. Menopause Is the Milestone.
Perimenopause can feel like someone changed the rules without bothering to tell you.
Your cycle changes. Sleep gets weird. Recovery changes. Your body composition may start shifting.
Maybe your mood feels different.
Maybe your tolerance for alcohol disappears overnight.
Maybe the workout and diet that worked beautifully at 35 suddenly aren't doing much of anything.
And naturally, a lot of women start wondering:
What is happening to me?
But perimenopause isn't your body failing.
It's a transition.
And menopause—technically reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period—is a milestone within that transition.
Which means eventually, there is another side.
Not a perfect side.
Not a side where you suddenly wake up with perfect hormones, perfect sleep and zero problems.
But another chapter.
And I think we should talk much more about how we want to live in it.
BUILD: Protect the Body You're Going to Live In
Menopause care shouldn't begin and end with whether you're having hot flashes. Those symptoms matter. But so does your long-term health.
This is the chapter where I want women thinking about muscle, bone, cardiovascular health, metabolic health, brain health, sexual and genitourinary health.
Not because I want you terrified of getting older. Actually, the opposite.
Because I want you prepared to do a LOT of getting older.
This is why I care so much about strength training in midlife.
I'm not lifting weights because I'm desperately trying to hang onto my younger body.
I lift because I plan on getting older; and I want muscle when I get there.
I want to carry my own suitcase.
Get off the floor, travel, hike, work, play and live independently for as long as possible.
The same goes for knowing your health numbers.
Blood pressure.
Glucose and A1C.
Lipids.
Iron status.
Bone density when appropriate.
The goal isn't to become obsessed with biomarkers.
It's to understand what's happening before something becomes a much bigger problem.
Numbers are clues. Trends tell a story.
This is what I mean when I say:
Test, don't guess.
OPTIMIZE: Use the Tools Available to You
Let's talk about HRT.
I use it, I love having it as part of my toolbox, and I also think we've swung between two extremes when we talk about it.
For years, women were terrified of hormone therapy. Now, in some corners of wellness, it can sound like HRT is the answer to practically everything that happens after 40.
Neither conversation leaves much room for nuance.
HRT can be an incredibly valuable tool for the right woman, but it's still a tool.
Your first prescription may not be your final prescription:
Dose matters.
Delivery method matters.
Your symptoms matter.
Your health history matters.
And what you're actually trying to treat matters.
If you started HRT because you're waking up drenched every night, are the night sweats improving?
If sleep was your biggest problem, what's happening with your sleep?
What's better?
What hasn't changed?
What appeared after you started?
When is your follow-up?
Don't just get the prescription. Stay part of the conversation.
And please remember:
The patch doesn't lift the weights, it doesn't make dinner, it doesn't put you to bed, it doesn't manage your stress.
I still have to do those things.
Because supporting your health doesn't require performing wellness perfectly 24/7.
HRT can support the process. It doesn't become the process.
And Please Stop Blaming Everything on Your Hormones
This might sound strange coming from someone who talks about hormones all the time.
But not everything happening in midlife is a hormone problem.
Exhausted? Hormones could absolutely be involved.
But what about iron? Thyroid? Sleep? Under-fueling? Stress? Blood sugar? Brain fog?
Again, hormones may contribute.
But so can poor sleep, B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, stress, alcohol, medications and metabolic health.
Body composition changing?
Hormones influence it.
But muscle mass, activity, nutrition, sleep, medications and lifestyle matter too.
This is why I don't like chasing one symptom with one solution.
Your hormones matter. They're just not the only thing that matters.
Look at the whole woman.
BECOME: Maybe This Is the Part Nobody Told Us About
And then there's the part of menopause that doesn't fit neatly onto a lab report.
The woman herself.
I recently heard someone describe this stage as the “hormonal veil lifting.”
That's not a medical term, but I immediately knew what she meant.
For so much of our lives, women are taught—directly or indirectly—to be nice.
Be pretty.
Don't be too loud.
Don't be difficult.
Take care of everyone.
Keep the peace.
Say yes.
Make yourself easy to accommodate.
And somewhere in midlife, something can start to shift.
Maybe it's hormones, maybe it's age, maybe it's experience.
Maybe it's simply having lived long enough to realize your time and energy are not unlimited resources.
Probably a little bit of everything.
But suddenly, NO gets easier.
Your boundaries get clearer.
You stop explaining every decision.
You protect your energy differently.
You become more honest about what you want—and what you absolutely do not want.
And I LOVE that part.
We talk endlessly about everything women supposedly lose in menopause.
Can we please talk about what we might gain?
Confidence.
Clarity.
Boundaries.
Perspective.
Freedom.
Maybe getting older isn't about becoming less.
Maybe it's about becoming much more selective about what deserves your time, body, attention and energy.
I Don't Want My 30-Year-Old Body Back
I loved younger me. She was fun, she was ambitious, she made some questionable decisions. 😂
And she got me here.
But I don't want her life back.
I like what I know now.
I like what I've built.
I like knowing what matters to me—and what really doesn't.
And I don't want to spend the next several decades desperately trying to make my body look like hers.
I want to build the strongest, healthiest, most capable version of the body I have NOW.
Because the goal isn't to stop aging.
The goal is to participate in it.
Fully.
For as long as I possibly can.
What If the Other Side Is Even Better?
I won't tell you menopause magically makes life better.
It doesn't.
Some women have a difficult transition.
Some need medical support.
Some need HRT.
Some don't.
Some are dealing with symptoms that genuinely affect their quality of life.
Every woman's experience is different.
But I refuse to believe that the only menopause story worth telling is one about decline.
Perimenopause may be the transition.
Menopause may be the milestone.
But YOU are what comes next.
So build the muscle.
Know your numbers.
Ask better questions.
Use the tools that make sense for you.
Eat well.
Sleep.
Protect your energy.
Set the boundary.
Say no when you mean no.
Eat the damn ice cream sometimes.
And stop trying so hard to become the woman you used to be.
There is an entire woman waiting on the other side.
And I have a feeling she might be your favorite version yet.
